In May 2023, shocking news broke.
Mr. Isitani of Trout & King, a travel agency specializing in fishing, had caught a bonefish in Japan, on the fly.
I couldn't stand still, so I immediately got the information and prepared to head for the island.
In the lead up to my departure, I met and interviewed the people involved in this news.
I wanted to leave a legacy on film of the process of building a culture.
The bonefish is an icon of saltwater fly fishing.
Everyone thinks of sight fishing, walking on the flats looking for fish.
However, that is far from the image of fly fishing that Mr. Isiya envisioned,
but it is the result of his inquisitiveness about fly fishing.
There is an infinite difference between zero and one. I could not take it to the next step.
I would like to continue on the road to the ideal of "sight fishing"
slowly and steadily, while involving many anglers.
I wanted to fish wading, with a floating line, or even blind.
I figured I would need flying fish and horns to make steady progress on the southern islands, where I rarely go.
Taking advantage of my previous fishing and reporting experience, I set out on a strategy that could be called ”forbidden” for a fly fisherman.
I learned from the kibble of the TOKYO FLAT that being unconventional and unbound by stereotypes can lead to the creation of a new culture.
I needed that forbidden strategy to shake off my evil thoughts.
And I was able to board the plane home in a great mood.
