The company was founded in the 1940s and 1950s in the United States.

In the 1940s and 1950s, American Catskill fly tyer Harry Darbee created the fly tying hackle that would become the basis for today's Genetic Hackle through a process of trial and error. This wonderful hackle was eventually passed on to Minnesota attorney Andy Miner (Mr. Miner of the Whiting "Hiebert Miner" hackle) and evolved dramatically into a very thin hackle with a wide variety of colors. The hackle has evolved dramatically into a very thin and versatile hackle with a wide variety of colors.

This evolution of fly tying hackle was later passed on to several breeders. The hackle and his company were acquired by Bill Keough in 1990, and after more than 20 years of quality improvement, the result is today's KEOUGH Hackle.
